This summer South Staffs Water experienced a criminal cyber attack. Since that time the company has been working to resolve the issue, track down those responsible, and bolster their cyber security.

The matter was the subject of a debate in Parliament last week and I attended to raise the concerns of my constituents who have been affected.

Following the incident South Staffs Water found evidence that some of their staff and customer data had been accessed. Some of this data was subsequently published by the criminals on the part of the internet not accessible via search engine – the part known as the dark web.

The incident did not affect the ability of South Staffs Water to supply safe water.

The water company has set up a dedicated helpline for impacted customers so that they can prioritise answering their questions and give them the support they need.  This freephone is available 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and there is support on the website at www.south-staffs-water.co.uk/help-and-advice/support.
