The Government have outlined plans to implement a new system of consent for organ and tissue donation, saving hundreds of lives each year.
It is important to note that these plans will mean everyone is considered an organ donor unless they have explicitly recorded a wish not to be or they are from one of a number of excluded groups. However, there will be strict safeguards in place and specialist nurses will always discuss donation with families so an individual’s wishes are respected whilst also recognising the importance of those who want to be able to explicitly record a wish to opt out.
I really welcome this decision as Organ donation saves lives. The proposed changes will help people who are waiting for a life-saving transplant, saving as many as 700 lives every year.
