Delighted to learn that approval in principle has been given for a memorial to honour the brave men and women of the RAF’s Photographic Reconnaissance Units (PRU) – including heroes from our own constituency.

One such hero was Flying Officer Eugene Cotton from Rushall, who flew dangerous missions during WWII and never returned. His father, Arthur Cotton, served as the organist and choirmaster at St Michael’s Church, Pelsall, a cornerstone of our local community. His mother Ethel taught at Pelsall School.  Eugene’s sacrifice is a poignant reminder of the bravery that came from right here at home.

He was posted to the 684 Photographic Reconnaissance Sqn based in the Far East where he carried out long range reconnaissance operations over Japanese held territory.

The memorial will be placed near the Churchill War Rooms in London, recognising the vital intelligence work these unsung heroes provided during WWII.

If you have any stories or information about Eugene Cotton or other local PRU servicemen and women, please do get in touch.
