I am pleased that the Pet Abduction Act has been enacted. Focusing on dogs and cats, the Act can include other animals like ferrets if necessary in the future. Knowing the interest residents have showed in this, I am glad it is now law.
Previously, penalties were determined solely by the pet’s financial value. The Pet Abduction Act now considers the emotional impact on a family when their pet is taken and the distress caused to the animal. If someone were to steal a dog today, they could potentially face a 5-year prison sentence and a substantial fine.
