Last week the Government set out a new points based immigration system. Acting on the outcome of the EU Referendum we are ending free movement, taking back control of our borders and delivering on your priorities to reduce overall migration.

Our new immigration system will take effect from 1 January 2021. As part of the new system we will assign points for specific skills, qualifications, salaries or professions with visas only awarded to those who gain enough points, ensuring we attract the brightest and best to our country.

Ending free movement from the European Union means we will welcome people to work in the UK on the basis of their skills and qualifications, not their nationality. Our new single global system will treat EU and non-EU citizens equally, giving top priority to those with the highest skills and greatest talents, including scientists, engineers and academics.

Our new immigration system will be truly global in its outlook it will help to boost the economy and communities, and unleash Britain’s full potential.
