Against all the odds and after more than 9 years of campaigning thanks to the foresight of Mayor Andy Street a train station will be returning to Aldridge for the first time since 1965.
Since before I became the Member of Parliament in 2015, I have been campaigning for a train station in my Aldridge-Brownhills constituency. It wasn’t until the election of Mayor Andy Street in 2017 that this started to become a reality.
This is great news for Aldridge and places our community on the map and opens up so many opportunities for people across the Village and my wider Aldridge-Brownhills constituency.
The £30 million project is combined with longer term plans which could see both the line electrified offering direct services to Birmingham and beyond, and an upgraded station as part of the wider reopening of the Sutton Park Line to passenger services.
The new Wrexham, Shropshire and Midlands Railway Company (WSMR) has recently announced plans to run services from north Wales and Shropshire to London Euston. This will be via the Sutton Park Line and the opportunities for the service to stop at Aldridge are being explored.
The new train station will be subject to planning approval, but we could start to see the first passenger trains leaving Aldridge in 2027.
I was delighted earlier today to be onsite with Mayor Andy Street and key industry representatives for the launch of this exciting project in the heart of our local community.
